The Hidden Clarity Method™ is a structured, trauma-informed approach designed to build a clearer and more compassionate understanding of a child or young person’s experiences.
Too often, we respond to what we can see — without fully understanding what may be driving it.
This approach focuses on identifying:
• what feels difficult
• what creates a sense of safety
• what patterns may be emerging
…so that support can be meaningful, appropriate, and effective.
This approach can support:
• Parents who are trying to better understand their child
• Schools and SENCOs exploring patterns, needs, and barriers
• Local Authorities seeking a clearer picture to inform provision and planning
It is particularly helpful where there are:
• emotional or behavioural changes
• difficulties with engagement in education
• anxiety, overwhelm, or sensory differences
• challenges linked to neurodivergence or past experiences
The Hidden Clarity Method™ is not about applying more strategies.
It is about:
• understanding what is really going on
• identifying mismatches between needs and environment
• reducing unnecessary pressure
• building a foundation for safe and sustainable progress
The Hidden Clarity Method™ is a formulation-based process designed to explore the underlying factors contributing to a child or young person’s difficulties, particularly where presentation may appear complex, unclear, or misunderstood.
The process involves gathering information from parents, professionals, educational settings, and, importantly, from direct work with the child or young person. This direct interaction is vital to the process, as it helps build a more comprehensive understanding of the child’s experiences, communication, emotional responses, regulation patterns, strengths, barriers, and unmet needs.
The Hidden Clarity Method™ can be used to support:
• understanding barriers to school attendance or engagement
• identifying underlying drivers of distress, overwhelm, shutdown, or behavioural presentation
• supporting EBSNA/EOTAS understanding and planning
• contributing to EHCP evidence and professional reports
• identifying push/pull factors affecting education and wellbeing
• helping families, schools, and professionals develop more effective and appropriate support approaches
• creating a clearer formulation-based understanding where previous explanations may not fully account for the presentation
The aim is not simply to focus on behaviour in isolation, but to identify the deeper patterns, needs, environmental factors, and nervous system responses influencing the child’s functioning and wellbeing.
The aim is to:
• reduce barriers to engagement
• build a sense of safety and trust
• support gradual and appropriate re-engagement with education where possible
The Hidden Clarity Method™ begins with a structured understanding process.
This gathers insight into:
• history and experiences
• current presentation
• patterns and triggers
• environmental influences
• what is already working
This information is then used to build a clear, joined-up understanding that can guide next steps.
